Safe Travel At Night Message In Short Film
The London Mayor's campaign to promote safer travel at night has stepped up a gear: a short film by acclaimed British director Mike Leigh will be shown at cinemas all over London warning of the dangers of using illegal minicab touts and promoting safer ways of
travelling at night

Leigh has directed the film as part of a campaign - 'Know what you are getting into' - which has been produced by the Mayor, the Metropolitan Police and the City of London Police.

Crucially the film is just one part of an integrated action plan that not only highlights the risks and promotes safer alternatives but delivers additional safety improvements.

Ken Livingstone said: 'With 18 assaults on women in London each month I am committed to cracking down on illegal touts and providing safer travel for women at night.'

'This film will make Londoners think twice about jumping into an illegal mini-cab and reconsider how they get home after a night out. There are now more black cabs ion the street, more night buses and I am licensing mini-cabs. So don't take the risk of using illegal touts.'

Director Mike Leigh said: 'The late night illegal cab situation in London is disastrous, especially for women, and I congratulate the Mayor and all the other agencies responsible for initiating this campaign, to which it has been an honour to contribute.'

The new cinema ad shows a harmless-looking middle-aged man talking to us as he drives. He tells us that he's been in and out of trouble over the years, and how hard it is to get a proper job with a criminal record. A conviction for sexual assault hasn't stopped him from picking up women, though - far from it. We see him stop the car and lean out to talk to a young woman on the pavement - 'minicab love?' he says.

Nicky Gavron, Deputy Mayor of London said: 'There are now much easier, safer and more reliable options overnight. More night buses than ever running to more destinations right across the capital and more black cabs are available through the night.'

Deputy Commissioner Ian Blair, Metropolitan Police said: 'The film is part of a strong campaign to tackle this worrying crime and to make travel at night
safer for women.
